Phil Ivey has been referred to as the greatest poker competitor on the planet by many of the top-ranked pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to NJ before his first birthday. His grandpa showed him to one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was addicted to poker and wanted to discover everything he could about poker. He would tell his grandparents that he was going to be a professional poker player. He didn’t allow the detrimental feedback from others kill his dream of becoming one of the strongest poker players in the world.
Phil began competing seriously after acquiring a false ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his techniques at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The first number of years for him were a learning experience and winning wasn’t a normal outcome at the time. He became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he made 2 final tables and won his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the last table he defeated many of the better known pros which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil decided to take his skills to the successive level and headed out west to Vegas. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Phil credits his achievements to dedication and an eternal passion for the game of poker. Phil says that he is picking up skills every day and is very humble about his success. Phil admits to making blunders in each session of poker and always strives to improve.
Although Phil has come first in some big-time tournaments, he likes winning cash games on a normal basis.
