Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has increased in popularity so quickly.
Omaha hi/lo starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens and then the river card is flipped. The players will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few players often get baffled. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to use precisely three cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same concept in almost every poker game.
The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem complex initially, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the base nuances of play with ease.
