Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he enjoyed betting on numerous card games when he was young. He found himself getting very aggressive in these card games while playing his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little bit and relocated to New York City to participate in some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were difficult as he would play many hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He made some extra cash by being an runner for the poker players. He believed he possibly could better his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an attempt to acquire more rest and concentrate more on the game.

The actual improvement in his game happened when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would frequently wager against one another. Howard had access into some of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, Howard would hone his strategic thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL Texas Holdem.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. He told Annie to head out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie is one of the greatest female players the poker world ever. Howard Lederer moved to Sin City in 1993 and competed in money games for the next decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to participate in more tournaments.
